Let's Talk Meetings

Whether it is stress, sadness, relationship problems or academic pressures, sharing your concern with another person can make a positive difference. Let's Talk is a brief meeting and is available to all SF State students. It's informal, confidential, completely free, and no topic is off limits. It is a place where you can talk about concerns and receive expert suggestions about solutions and resources or just have someone to listen and offer support.

Although Let's Talk counselors are also mental health professionals, Let's Talk is not a substitute for formal counseling or psychotherapy and does not constitute mental health treatment.

Let's Talk FAQ

CAPS Let's Talk Fall 2024 flyer

Counselors at the Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) provide brief counseling, which usually consists of weekly 45 minute appointments.

While counseling at CAPS offers ongoing counseling support, Let’s Talk is an informal meeting (usually around 15 minutes) where students can meet with a counselor for a one-time informal consultation.

Please schedule on the MyHealth portal! We are located all around campus as well as online, and are looking forward to meeting with you!

Let’s Talk provides easy access to informal confidential consultations with a counselor from Counseling & Psychological Services. At a visit, the counselor will listen closely to your concerns and provide support, perspective, and suggestions for resources.

Absolutely. Let’s Talk counselors provide these meetings to help students with specific problems and to introduce them to what it’s like to speak with a counselor. Your Let’s Talk counselor can help you determine whether formal counseling at CAPS would be useful for you and, if appropriate, assist you in scheduling an appointment.

If you believe you need to be seen sooner than the appointment you were given, it's best to call CAPS directly and explain your situation.

CAPS counselors will discuss and provide referrals whenever that is the most appropriate service given a student's situation and need. We would suggest following up with the referrals.

Let’s Talk meetings are great, and provide easy access to informal confidential consultations with a counselor, but they are meant to be one-time informal meetings.

Conversations with a Let's Talk counselor are confidential, with a few rare exceptions. Consultants may need to share information in an emergency such as:

  • an immediate threat of harm to yourself or others
  • required by law to report when a minor, elderly person, or someone otherwise incapacitated and unable to act on his/her own behalf is being abused

If you have further questions about confidentiality, we encourage you to discuss them with a Let's Talk counselor.
